Gabe Newell: Portal 2 is “The Best Game We’ve Ever Done”

    March 12th, 2010

    Portal

Following this year’s Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony, we were able to grab Valve’s Gabe Newell for a brief chat about Portal 2, wherein he mentioned that he thinks it is the best game Valve has ever created. Here’s the transcript of our interview:

1UP: Was Portal 2 from the beginning always going to be a full price game?

Gabe Newell: “One of the nice things about The Orange Box was it allowed us to try out a couple of different things, and Portal really seemed to resonate. We got the signals that we wanted — this is what people liked; this is what people didn’t like. And to us, it was like, ‘OK now we know how to take this big,’ so that’s what we’re going to do with Portal 2.”

Co-op’s the name of the game in the new Lara Croft

    March 12th, 2010

    LCGOL_LOGO

Crystal Dynamics was kind enough to show off a bit of Lara Croft to VG247 today, and it looks like a neat arcade game you and a pal can play together and have a bit of fun.

During the co-op in the game, there will be times when Lara is going to have to rely on Totec and vise versa.

For example, Totec can throw spears into walls so Lara can climb, he can let her jump onto his shield so she can leap off onto a previously out of reach ledge, and he is good at helping her figure out two-person puzzles.

Totec also has to rely on Lara,  with one example being him needing to get across a large chasm. In order to do so, Lara will have to get over there first, and have him blindly leap in her direction so that she can catch him and pull him up with her grappling hook.

If you want to be a jerk about it, and are playing as Lara, you can just stand by and watch your pal fall. We would, and laugh about it – at least once or twice.

The game really looks vast for an arcade style game, as it uses the same engine used in Underworld – therefore, you’ll see tress and branches sway in the breeze, and all other sorts of cool environmental graphics with no loads times.

Game’s slated for late summer on PC, PSN and XBL.

We have some screens of it below. Enjoy.

The trio, who have also created and spearheaded the Child’s Play Charity and the Penny Arcade Expo, were awarded the honor for their work creating their genuine, gamer-friendly empire by skewering video game culture and developers while building up a following, events and an industry-leading video game charity that help epitomize the positive elements of ‘gamer spirit.’

‘Deus Ex 3: Human Revolution’ Trailer Premieres During Game Developer Awards

    March 12th, 2010

    Deus Ex Human Revolution

The Game Developers Choice Awards took an unexpected turn on Thursday night as its host, Warren Spector, introduced a new trailer to the latest installment to the franchise he created: “Deus Ex: Human Revolution.”

The trailer started with a crowd of Renaissance-era physicians circled around a lifeless body. That was until the spirit of the body rose up and spread a wide set of angelic wings, crashing through the ceiling of a massive dome, flying directly into the sky. The wings quickly burned up in the sunlight, mimicking the story of Icarus, and the camera pans to reveal the spirit as that of Adam Jensen, the protagonist of the game, who suddenly awakes from this strange dream in his present-day apartment. He is shown with powerful cybernetic arms and, attempting to take a swig from a glass, accidentally cracks it in his palm.

From there things take a dark turn, showing a grim, futuristic skyline and a world that has seen the effects of widespread cybernetic use.

Unfortunately we haven’t gotten a direct feed of the trailer just yet, but when we do, you can be sure I’ll update this post so you can enjoy the trailer for yourself.

More Open-World Options Possible After ‘Final Fantasy XIII’

    March 11th, 2010

    Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy XIII” was able to do a lot of things, like take up three Xbox 360 discs, ship 5 million units internationally and get its own 360 bundle. Square Enix left behind some traditional elements of the series, though, and sprawling villages where you can poke around and talk to people as you like became one of those sacrifices. Now that the game’s epic development phase is is complete, however, Square Enix thinks they may be able to bring such features back in their next non-MMO installment.

“The next time you see a ‘Final Fantasy,’ we might be able to pack in more of those elements that existed in the past,” “Final Fantasy XIII” director Motomu Toriyama told Gamasutra. “And I also think that a game doesn’t need to have all of those items in the future. We can create additional downloadable content for people to add, too. It doesn’t have to come with that game itself.”

Toriyama discussed the demands of developing a 50-60-hour RPG like “Final Fantasy XIII” for the PS3 and 360, and said that the demands they faced without more open-air environments were sizable enough. Now that they have what he calls “base technology,” completed, such things may have a better chance of showing up down the road.

If the gameplay is good enough, I can’t imagine many players quibbling if they get 60 hours of engrossing sitdown time out of “FFXIII.” Traditionalists will likely disagreement with me, though. My main concern when I sit down with it will be how much environment they sacrificed in favor of button-mashing minigames, which could stand to hurt Toriyama’s case. We’ll see what shows up.

What do you think of “FFXIII”? Do you think it holds its own against its predecessors? Share your views in the comment section below.

ModNation Racers Hands-on from GDC 2010

    March 11th, 2010

ModNation Racers (PS3) is close to coming out, and while neither developer United Front or publisher Sony will say exactly when, the version I played here at GDC shows a lot of those final improvements that tell me it’s about ready.

Most importantly, the racing has come up to speed. I raced two of the 28 tracks that will come with the game and nothing interrupted the flow of the race. With the action smooth on the screen I was able to drift corners right on the line I wanted, maintain control while boosting, and fire off weapons without worrying that they’d throw me off.

The track creation tools have also come a long way. I found it much easier to select what I wanted to, move, and then position it. The simple addition of a new lasso selection tool …

The Tester Episode 4 Available Today

    March 11th, 2010

Hey The Tester fans. It’s Thursday, which means the wait is over for the next episode of The Tester.

Game developers know that the ability to thrive in almost any situation and use creativity to problem-solve are key qualities necessary to work in quality assurance. Testers must be able to adapt and create scenarios to fully analyze a game.

So, what better way to take people out of their comfort zone and assess their creativity than with a surprise live-action role play? That’s right, things definitely get dramatic this week as the remaining 7 gamers use random props, their wits and sheer guts to entertain and impress the panel.

And to help evaluate the performances, PlayStation Home’s Katherine de Leon joins Brent Gocke and Hal Sparks on this week’s panel. Katherine oversees the creation of environments and virtual merchandise for the platform. An RPG veteran and former US Marine, she brings strong opinions and her d20 to this challenge.

    Don’t miss Episode 4.

Thanks again for downloading and watching. Enjoy the show!

    March 11th, 2010

    fableIII

Peter Molyneux’s confirmed during his GDC seminar tonight that Fable III will have Twitter support.

The Lionhead boss confirmed the news earlier, saying how important it was to acquire followers in the game in a similar vein to the service.

“I Twitter now and, you know, I’ve got followers on Twitter,” he said, referring to his new found love for the service.

“That’s an interesting mechanic, and we integrate that into the Fable experience.”

He didn’t quite say it would integrate into the service.

Molyneux earlier detailed some of the usage for the game featuring Natal, as well as confirming John Cleese would feature as the Butler.

New shots just went live as well.

Fable III’s due out later this year.

‘Torchlight’ Looking For A Way Onto Consoles

    March 11th, 2010

    Torchlight

Torchlight” did a few things better than Blizzard’s “Diablo” series, and the action RPG’s makers have one more trick in mind that “Diablo” tried out on the PlayStation — transitioning onto consoles. The games’ developers haven’t ported the game yet, but it sounds like they’re pushing hard to get one out.

“We’re going to put some serious effort into it — pretty quick — getting ‘Torchlight’ onto consoles,” Runic Games CEO Max Schaefer told The Rumble Pack. “There’s a lot of really cool things about the console world, too, that would work well with our game.”

“Torchlight” is a really beautiful piece of work, but even though its control scheme distinguishes itself from “Diablo” in a few key areas, it will need some smart retooling to move smoothly on the 360 or PS3. Even a Wii edition would take some general concept tinkering, but I could see the Move and Wii Remote providing some key solutions.

The game would be worth the effort, though, so I hope they’re successful. Their work would no doubt provide a great case study for future PC-to-console ports and would give the game an increased level of exposure.

Would you like to see “Torchlight” on consoles? Do you think a console port makes sense? Share your reactions in the comment section below.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 mode update hits March 30 – wuh-oh

    March 11th, 2010

    BFBC22

EA DICE has announced that anyone’s who redeemed their VIP code for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will get a mode update on existing maps in the game on March 30.

What else happens that day? Oh right: “this“.

The two maps in question are Arica Harbour and Laguna Presa, Conquest and Rush maps respectively. The update will allow both modes to be playable on both maps.

The move is part of EA’s Project Ten Dollar deal on cutting down pre-owned games. If you have a copy of the game pre-owned, you’ll have to buy a VIP code from the PS Store, Marketplace and the PC version.

Producer for the title, Karl Magnus Troedsson said the move was “‘mapathy’ without getting nickel-and-dimed”. He did not just go there, girlfriend!

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 went to number one this week in the UK after its release last week, also becoming the fast-selling game this year.
